During 1962 the first fruits of the revision of the American High SchooJ biology curricuJum reached New Zealand and some teachers began experimenting with the new materiaJs. In J963 and J964 the Department of Education caJled two confereoces consisting of university and high school teachers and Education Department inspectors to examine the adequacy of the University Entrance and Scholarship syJlabuses, the quaJity of the EngJish texts traditionaJly used and the quaJity of the teaching in high school biology. As a resuJt new syJlabuses were drawn up and pubJished by the University Grants Committee (1969), and a proposaJ that a Jocal textbook and practicaJ manual be written was financed by the Department of Education.
